My Maggie had a bout of diarrhea recently. After visiting the vet, it was determined that she had a bug. I wanted to look for an alternative instead of putting her on a prescription med. Someone at work had said to try canned pumpkin. I did and it helped, so I thought I would share this with you. I have found a lot of information on the net to support this that proved to be quite interesting.
Try Natural Remedies First
If your vet has ruled out any major issue, canned pumpkin should be the first remedy to try. You can mix it with some rice if desired, but most dogs respond well to canned pumpkin. Make sure you purchase plain canned pumpkin and not the sweetened pie filling.
Canned pumpkin is high in fiber. The fiber gets into the intestines and soaks up water. If the diarrhea is the result of a change to the dog's diet or a stomach bug, the pumpkin will help slow the diarrhea down and help reduce the risk of dehydration.

Happy Doggies Pumpkin Banana Doggie Biscotti
2 cups oat flour
1 cup brown rice flour
1/3 cup mashed banana
1/2 cup pure canned pumpkin (not pie filling)
1/4 cup rolled oats
1/4 cup oil (we use canola)
1- 1 1/2 cup water (approx)
2 tsp Cinnamon plus some for sprinkling
In a large bowl mix flours, mushed banana, pumpkin and oil. Add oats and cinnamon. Mix in water gradually until you can form a dough (don’t over-mix). When you can make a log from the dough, form either one or two large logs or smaller ones (depending on whether you want big or small biscotti). Sprinkle the logs with oats and cinnamon, if desired. Cut logs into biscotti shapes. Place on baking sheet (preferably lined with parchment paper) and bake at 300F for about 35-40 minutes until biscotti are crispy, dry, but not too golden. You want them to be crunchy but not overcooked.
Notes: These don’t have to be biscotti shapes, of course. We just found these to be the fastest and easiest shapes.
If you do use regular or whole wheat flour, the dough will be much tougher to use and cut into shapes. Cooking time may be a little longer depending on the shape of your treats and how thick they are cut or rolled out. Check after 40-45 minutes, but they may need closer to an hour.
